Concept
We fabricated a brush tool with integrated sensors for recording the haptic feeling of painting. The brush collects 6-axis force data, grip force, and 9-axis IMU (accelerometers, gyroscope, magnetometer). This data is then transmitted through WiFi by a Raspberry Pi to a remote server. The Movement of the brush handle is also tracked by Optitrack motion capture system. The artists demanded easily swappable brush tips and discreet sensor placement for unobtrusive data collection. Multiple prototypes were created with each iteration presented to the artists for feedback. Two different designs were finalized, one with force sensor and another thinner version without a force sensor. The final version was approved by the artists and currently six copies are being used to collect haptic data.
